Ahhhhh….Spring is here and with it a convention somewhere EVERY weekend!

I just got back from a wonderful trip to Anaheim and WonderCon. I met a lot of you there and not a chance to introduce us and our services to a lot of creator/publishers. I love attending conventions. Conventions are invigorating. They make you want to go home and create! They give you that drive to finally finish up that next issue you’ve been working on for a mighty long time. It’s heartening to see the passion to create comics in so many people.

Can I print a book that’s all — or mostly — text?

Submitted by BarryGregory on May 21, 2010 – 3:49 pm8 Comments

Sure. We can do that. Just place the order as you would an order for a comic, include your page count, quantities, etc. Then in the notes field of the order form let us know that the book is prose not graphics.

You’ve got a couple of options as to how to prep the files …

You can send the interior pages to us as if they were comic pages … flattened tifs, sized appropriately. Or what would probably be easier would be to fully typeset the interior pages in your desktop publishing software of choice (Quark, InDesign, etc.), then export the file as a PDF and send us that. If you choose the second option then be sure that you either convert all of your fonts to curves (if possible) or else include all fonts used in the document when you send it to us. The covers should be sent in compliance with our standard tech specs.

I’m interested in printing up comics with you but there is a “Free Printing… Indie Comics Ad” in front of everything I’m trying to see and I don’t know how to close it. I don’t know if that’s effecting business but until I can see what I’m looking at I’m going to have to take my business elsewhere.

    Sorry,
    Nev

That’s actually the page footer. I don’t know why you’re seeing out of place. I’ve disabled it until I can figure it out.

I’m interested in printing a manga-sized prose book. If I send it as a PDF, what should the pages’ dimensions be? Trim size (5″ x 7.5″) or template size (5.5″ x 7.75″)? PDF doesn’t have “resolution,” per se, so is that a moot point then?
Thanks, in advance, for your advice.

Template size please. Presumably your book will have some image on the cover, so resolution is not entirely moot.

If I’m doing a book that’s mostly text with some images inside, do I just add the images in the pdf>

Also what do I do for the cover images?

Send your covers at tiff files per our tech specs. As to the interiors … do a bit of googling for building pdfs.

I’m planning on creating a children’s book and was referred to this website by a friend. I’m kinda bummed that you stopped with hardcovers, but I think my book idea can also work as a paperback. I want my book to have both words and pictures, maybe with the left sheets having text and the right sheets having the picture, or maybe the pages can have the pictures with the text at the bottom or top of the pages. I see Ka-Blam can print comics, magazines, and manga, but could you also help print children’s books?

Certainly. Just make sure it fits into our tech specs and we’re golden.

Pages vs. Sheets

One of the most common mistakes we see on orders is with regard to page count. There is a tendency to confuse sheets with pages. Don’t make that mistake. Sheets and pages are NOT synonymous
