Five Years of Ka-Blam … and the Beginning of the Next Five!

The first day of February 2011 will mark the official end of our Fifth year of operations and the beginning of our Sixth. Yep, it was February 1, 2006 when we flipped the switch on and announced that we were open for business and accepting orders.

We had actually formed Ka-Blam and began our research and mechanical testing about six or seven months previously and prior to that I had spent several months convincing my then-pregnant wife that it was a good idea to gamble our house and put about $100,000 in startup costs on credit cards just as our second child was about to be born. Having accomplished that, convincing Thomas to rewire his house and give up his spare bedroom for an “operations center” was nothing.

At the time I really believed in what we were doing and knew in my heart that it would “work” … but I greatly, greatly underestimated the response we would receive from all of you! Five years later I can see that we helped kick off a real revolution in the independent comic press. Today, there are more — and more variety in the styles, storytelling approaches, and artwork of — PRINTED independent comics than at any time EVER! Go to any comic convention of any size and you’ll see what I’m talking about. The artist alleys and independent press areas are filled with more comics by more eager and excited creators than at any time in the history of independent comics! I’m not trying to take credit for that (that’s what YOU’VE done) … but I think we certainly helped.

And now it’s time to kick off the next phase of the revolution! In the coming months we’ll be making regular announcements here on new features, new products, new promotions, and new opportunities. Some announcements might seem small … while some will be HUGE! You won’t believe some of the things we have planned! There’s NEVER been a better time to be an independent comics creator! Onward and Upward!

  1. I can’t wait to see the stuff you have planned! Happy 5th!

  2. Congrats on five years. I’m glad you guys are around, you’ve done great for my books.

  3. Congratulations on your 5th anniversary, and i would just like to say that if it wasnt for you guys my comic would still be a couple of pages on my computer.

You guys are great! The idea to start this biz was a VERY great one! I’m glad you guys are not only here, but definitely seem here to stay!!!

  5. What an inspiring story. We Indy Comic goers shouldn’t take this system for granted, we have much to thank you and the team for implementing this revolution of independent publishing in the comic/graphic novel/pop culture industry.

Keep up the amazing work guys, a Happy 5th Anniversary and a Happy New Year too! *thumbs up*

  6. I agree, Elson, and would like to add that Ka-Blam is one of the best, if not THE BEST on-demand comic book printers! I have been other places, and Ka-Blam has proven itself to me on many occasions (not that they need to, but have). They had me won on the first day I found them and started getting interactive! I could say so much more, but it all boils down to (and I think I speak for all of us when I say) I genuinely hope Ka-Blam is here to stay for at minimum FIVE times FIVE more years!

    :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

  7. Congratulations on our fifth anniversary. I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done to help out independent comic creators/publishers. Here’s to another 5 and more!

  8. Happy Birthday! If not for Ka-blam, my dreams of self publshing would never have come to pass. You are a real credit to the comic community!

  9. No doubt about it, you guys have definitely changed the landscape and put self publishing within reach of a bunch of us who would otherwise never have been able to afford it. Your Indyplanet service was, and still is, way ahead of its time. Keep doing your thing, because we need you!

  10. Congratulations on five years, folks!

  11. Woop it up!!! Hey Barry, is it time for a west coast expansion yet! Come on! I can clean out the garage & we can get crankin! Got me all excited now, cain’t wait ta here what’s in store!!! CONGRATULATIONS GANG!!!

  12. Happy 5 Year Anniversary!! As someone who remembers the days when your only option (as an indy creator) was either the copy machine or filling your whole garage with thousands upon thousands of copies–I GREATLY appreciate what you’ve done for indy creators. Quality, professional-looking books at prices and print runs that work for folks. THANK YOU!!

  13. Belated congratulations on your anniversary, guys. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is — I had no idea what a big leap of faith you made in starting up the company. And kudos to Jenni for being willing to make that leap with you!

Although I consider myself a one-man operation, Ka-Blam has been an important partner in publishing my books — I’m sure like a lot of others, I don’t know what I would have done if Ka-Blam hadn’t been around. It’s a plus that you guys are great friends (and supporters of my book) too!

Best wishes for continued success and growth!
